How Do You Motivate Teens To Do Their Best?
Most parents often wonder about the best approach that they can take in order to motivate their teenage children to put effort. Teenagers sometimes can be lazy and develop a don't care attitude towards life in general. If this is observed parents get into a worry frenzy and wonder how best to handle the situation. Some may visit a counselor or a therapist for advice and both offer similar solutions to the problem. They advise parents to be extra understanding and patient in order to build a relationship with their teenagers. Building a friendship ensures that trust and mutual respect between them exists and this helps them avoid conflict.
For teens to do their best in life for example in their school work, sports and other household activities, they require supervision without being a push-over. To motivate a teenager means to teach them to be responsible for their lives. This can be in the form of cleaning and tiding their rooms, cleaning after they are done eating, taking charge of their laundry and taking their studies seriously. Teaching them to be responsible in their own lives goes a long way to make them self driven and hard working. To motivate teenagers to give their best in whatever they do parent or guardians can do the following;
* Conditioning attitudes-positive attitude is a key driver in the life of any person whether young or old. Negative energy discourages and hinders people from achieving their maximum potential. To motivate your teenager, condition their attitude to become positive and to always see the good side of a situation.
* Developing skills-teaching your teenager to have a skill in life that can help them in life, this can serve as survival skills in life. For example cooking meals, cleaning up and taking up sports like swimming, football or basketball. This equips them even for the future.
* Not accepting excuses for being weak- as a guardian in a teenager's life, no matter the task you assign to your child it is essential not to take excuses that they may come up with for not doing their work. Instead of reprimanding the child, parents should encourage them to be strong and to accept that they have many abilities in themselves. Whether it is sports or education, do not encourage quitting.
* Providing positive influence- it is important for a teenager to feel loved and appreciated in the family. In case of criticism, it should be done in a loving but firm manner. Having positive influence around the teenager ensures that they have role models to look up to for inspiration. If a child lacks motivation from those around them then it is likely that they will be lazy and not take life with the seriousness that is required.
Conclusion
In general, parents and teachers should act as mentors to the teenager in order to set a clear path for them to follow. In doing so they will grow up to be goal oriented and will not have to be pushed around and reminded constantly to take charge of their lives.
